Set Free

“Now a man from the house of Levi went and married a daughter of Levi. And the woman conceived and gave birth to a son; and when she saw that he was beautiful, she hid him for three months. But when she could no longer hide him, she got him a papyrus basket and covered it with tar and pitch. Then she put the child in it and set it among the reeds by the bank of the Nile.” – Exodus 2:1-3

If you know this story in Exodus you know that Pharaoh’s daughter found the baby and found a Hebrew woman (Moses’ mother), she could pay to nurse the baby.

Moses’ mom set him free, not knowing what would happen to him, and before the day was over her baby was back, and she would be compensated for taking care of him.

What are you agonizing over today? What is the seemingly impossible situation which seems hopeless? Whatever that is, I’m sure you can relate to how Moses’ mom was feeling.

Maybe you need to give up a job.

Maybe you need to change your residence.

Maybe you need to give up a destructive pattern.

Maybe you need to give up worrying over a loved one.

Maybe you’ve been carrying something and it’s gotten way too heavy.

When we release something to God, He can do beyond what we imagined. We can rest in His sovereign love and will for us.

What was Moses’ mom thinking when she released her baby boy in a basket? Do you think she had any idea he would be returned to her?

A Hebrew woman sent her baby down a river, and this baby was returned to her before the sun set that day. Imagine her delight after the tears had washed her face clean and her gut-wrenching groans consumed her body—this child she gave up in hopes he’d find his way to safety, desperately trusting this would not be the greatest regret of her life—this child was returned to her.

Oftentimes, when we set something free, God uses it to craft a beautiful story of redemption. A love story.
