Pulling the Weeds in Our Lives
I spent the morning pulling weeds from my front “lawn.” I’m using the word lawn but actually it’s a rock garden—living in Arizona now front yards are often rock gardens. I thought it would be low maintenance but pulling weeds is quite grueling.
My back hurts.
As I was pulling the weeds I began thinking about the weeds in our lives. Weeds begin as tiny sprouts and left unattended will grow into large weeds which can spread into massive annoying jungles. My beautiful rock garden can turn into an ugly forest if I leave it unloved.
Just like a lovely lawn, if we leave our hearts unattended our beautiful hearts can turn to ugly weeds.
Weeds can take away our peace, joy, and happiness.
Allowed to fester and grow resentment, discontent, unlove, disgust, unforgiveness, and cold-heartedness can cause our heart to hurt and create havoc in our lives.
Our husband disappoints us, just a little, and a seed of unlove begins to grow.
Our wife forgets to do something, unintentionally, and a seed of discontent begins to grow.
Our friend says something which stings a bit, and a seed of resentment begins to grow.
A coworker makes an offhanded comment about a job we did, and a seed of disgust begins to grow.
We hurt another and dismiss the fact we owe an apology for our unkindness.
The fix for an overrun weed garden is to pull the weeds, making sure to get out the roots.
When pulling weeds it’s always best to get to the root of the problem.
When our lives begin to feel out of control and full of hurt it’s best to go to the roots to discover where the weed came from.
Ask a few questions:
Do I owe someone an apology?
Have I treated another unkindly or said something hurtful?
Were my feelings hurt?
Do I need to talk with someone to clear the air?
Are my extra ice cream cones and cupcakes and large portions masking a hurt?
I’m I avoiding my spouse because there’s a hurt in my heart?
Get to the root, be honest and take action. Go to God with all your concerns, hurts, and cracked hearts.
“Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.”
-Psalm 51:10
“For each tree is known by its own fruit. For men do not gather figs from thorns, not do they pick grapes from a briar bush.”
-Luke 6:44
Tend to your heart and love fully.
