Made For Connection
It was a Friday morning and hubby and I decided to head to a fun restaurant for breakfast—it was one of those fun trendy places.
As we enjoyed our meal I noticed the couple sitting to our right…
Both had their phones in front of them on the table and they were focused on their phones and not on each other. When their food came there wasn’t any conversation.
Have our phones taught us to not talk to each other?
Then looking to my left, I noticed the party seated on the other side of us. It was a mom with her three sons ranging in age from pre-teen to adult. What caught my eye was the youngest returning from what was most likely the restroom, and as he returned he looked around to see if anyone noticed his return. Mom was on her phone texting or whatever and gave no notice to her son’s return. Even more sad she didn’t engage in conversation with her sons, only gave her phone attention.
I remember feeling sorry for the little boy. He had a look of disappointment on his face as he returned to the table—that’s what caught my attention. It was like he was waiting for someone to notice him but he didn’t get noticed or acknowledged.
I know that feeling.
You’re gone, and no one noticed you weren’t there.
You show up to something, and no one noticed you were there.
It’s a lonely feeling.
Lonely.
If we are not careful we can miss the human interaction with a physical person. We can drop into feelings of loneliness and isolation, not reaching out for connection.
Connection.
We are made for connection and interaction. If we feel lonely, it’s time to reach out. Chances are others are feeling as you are and will welcome your invite for connection, for acknowledgment, for interaction.
We all need it.
“They were continually devoting themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.”
– Acts 2:42
“But if we walk in the Light as He Himself is in the Light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin.”
– 1 John 1:7
