Hakuna Matata: A Lesson From Our Youth
Recently I had the pleasure of meeting and hearing from a beautiful 16 year old young lady, Abbi Martin, who is currently on a debate team. As we talked she shared with me about an upcoming debate she would be having. When I asked her about her debate, and with a little prompting from me, she read me something that inspired me so much I wanted to share it with you.
With Abbi’s permission please enjoy her refreshing and energizing words:
In the famous words of Timon and Pumbaa, “Hakuna Matata, ain’t no passing craze, it means no worries for the rest of your days, it’s our problem-free philosophy.”
Hakuna Matata is what we call a motto. Now you might be asking what’s a motto? Nothing, what’s da matta wit you?
The Lion King has always been one of my favorite movies; however as I’ve grown older I feel like a lot of us have forgotten the very important message in this song.
In the Bible God tells us to let the children come to Him, He encourages us to have a childlike faith and attitude. Yet, as we enter into middle school, high school, college, and ultimately adulthood, we tend to take things too seriously.
In today’s society we tell our youth that education, jobs, and self-sufficiency are the most important things in life, and while it teaches us responsibility, the constant do or die, pass or fail mindset, steals our youthful hearts and minds. Based on this mindset we categorize our youth and our adults into two groups: those who take things too seriously, and those who are too irresponsible. We forget that it’s okay to be carefree while at the same time responsible.
Adopting a Hakuna Matata attitude can benefit our health, faith, and our relationships.
Wishing you all Hakuna Matata today!
Fondly,
Lu
