Christmas Thanksgiving During Our COVID Holiday Season

I joined my grandkids for their social distance picture with Santa this year. Santa sat in a slay with Mrs. Claus while over six feet away my grandkids got to wave, smile, and take pictures. Santa even addressed grandma.

“I’m guessing you are grandma,” Santa said to me.

“Yup” I responded.

“Well, Santa usually takes pictures with the grandmas, too, but not this year.”

Not this year…this year everything is different. But different doesn’t have to mean “not as good.” We can make this year one of our most memorable and enjoyable.

Christmas is a time for joy…

A time for fun…

A time for laughter…

A time for family…

A time to remember the birth of the baby who would one day change the world forever.

Imagine Mary, a young girl who finds herself pregnant, and not yet married. She could have filled her heart with despair.

But she didn’t.

When the angel Gabriel told her, “you will conceive in your womb and give birth to a son, and you shall name Him Jesus” (Luke 1:31), Mary said, “Behold, the Lord’s bond-servant; may it be done to me according to your word” (Luke 1:38).

Yes, this Christmas may be a little different, or a lot different, than Christmases before, but we can love the season and embrace all the joy and love it brings.

And we can embrace the gift of a more “focused” holiday celebration, for many of our distractions have been eliminated and we’re down to the basics.

The basics of…

Love…

Thankfulness..

Trust…

Devotion…

Acceptance…

And the light of Jesus.

We can adapt the mindset Mary had after hearing the news of the baby who “will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High” (Luke 1:32).

And Mary said:

“My soul exalts the Lord,

And my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior.

For He has had regard for the humble state of His bond-servant;

For behold, from now on all generations will call me blessed.

For the Mighty One has done great things for me;

And holy is His name.

And his mercy is to generation after generation toward those who fear Him.

– Luke 1:46-50

We can rejoice.

We can be thankful.

We can love fully.
