As the Fire Rages: A Marriage Parable

“Do we really need that?” This happens to be one of my most uttered phrases to my husband. Honestly, my wonderful husband drives me a little crazy. I feel like I often see a steady flow of incoming packages—packages of all shapes and sizes, of which even after they are opened I’ll give him that bug-eyed confused look and ask, “What is that?”

And then my favorite line, “Do we really need that?”

All kinds of gadgets and gizmos have been ushered into our lives. Many I don’t know how to use or even know how to turn on. I throw my hands in the air with a hearty, Whatever.

Sometimes I straight up just don’t understand him or why he does things. He’s awful cute but, Geez honey, do you really need so many toys?

And then, there’s this red thing on wheels. It’s some kind of rolling machine. Well, it broke down apparently and Mike had to find a shop that could fix it. The red machine got tossed in the truck, escorted to the machine spa where it stayed for a couple of weeks.

When my husband got it back home he was quite happy it was fixed and ready to go.

Not sure what it does, but it made my husband happy.

So, if he’s happy I guess I’m happy. *arms in the air shoulder shrug emoji

And then it happened. Our beautiful valley was engulfed in flames. (We live in a part of California that was hugely impacted by the recent fires.)

My daughter called me.

“Mom, have you seen the news?”

“No. Why?”

“Mom, look out your window. Do you see smoke?”

“Oh my goodness, YES.”

“Kyle is on his way home, I think we may get evacuated.”

“Okay sweetheart, you know you can come here.”

Less than an hour later another call came in.

I could hear the panic in my daughters voice, “Mom, we’re getting evacuated!”

They grabbed their kids—one three year old and a eight month old—and all they could fit in their cars and headed to us.

Many were without power, including us.

And suddenly something happened.

My husband started rolling out “stuff” from the garage including the red machine he had just gotten fixed. It was a generator. And while others were without power our generator powered up our fridge and other conveniences like the microwave and coffee pot.

We had portable lights and other gadgets which I have to admit were extremely handy. And not only this, our grandson had his own movable lights so that wherever he went he wasn’t afraid.

My husband saved the day!

While others, like my daughter, had to throw away the contents in their refrigerators and freezers ours stayed completely intact. While others had no lights, we had portable lights. While others couldn’t make coffee or heat up pizza, we could!

Can you say, Hero?

And now this is the point in the story where I get to eat crow.

Maybe I shouldn’t say, “Do we really need that?”

Oh, I’ll probably keep saying it but maybe just less often.

My husband. My hero. I am so thankful for him.

Ladies, do you have a husband who takes care of things? Thank God for him today.

Fondly,

Lu
