A Look at “I Feel Pretty” with Amy Schumer

With an awaited day away from the guys, my daughter and I decided a movie was on our list. After breakfast, and choosing “I Feel Pretty” with Amy Schumer my daughter informed me, “Hey Mom, you know there’s been a lot of controversy over this movie and people are hating on it, right?” Uh, no. I had no idea. I wasn’t trying to make a political statement I just wanted to have a fun time with my daughter.

We went anyway.

If you don’t know the premise of the movie, the basic plot is…

A single girl feels unattractive with no self-confidence, hits her head, feels pretty and overconfident, girl meets boy, and later, hits her head again realizing she’s always been the same, rethinks her relationship, but in the end falls in love, and is accepted for just who she is.

I don’t get what all the hate is about.

People are saying it has fat-shaming and is shallow and tone-deaf about body image and yada yada yada…

I call hogwash!

Come on people, we go to the movies to be entertained, and to laugh… and laugh we sure did! In my opinion, the movie poked fun at how our culture has an overemphasis on looks and weight and body image.

And…

Leaves each woman asking themself, How would I be different if I was completely satisfied with how I looked? Would I have more self-confidence?

In the movie Renee, played by Amy Schumer, asked a random guy out in a dry cleaners. Something the character would never do had she not been given her newfound confidence, and in a hilarious way, a date is set. It was funny, not at all demeaning.  You may ask yourself, If I felt completely satisfied with myself and my abilities what would I do differently?

Renee, with her newfound assurance about herself applies for her dream job, and lands it. Again, done in a funny manner, and it leaves you asking, How am I holding myself back?

And then, one of the funnies scenes in the movie, Renee enters a bikini contest, something she would have never done before getting hit in the head. Not only was this funny, Renee gushed enthusiasm, energy, confidence and the ability to win over the crowd with her humor. I thought it showed how ridiculous those contests are and that there are way better qualities than showing off your body with a bikini—which I don’t wear I might add. (Just in case you were wondering.) And the best part about the contest was that Renee wasn’t at all upset when she didn’t win.

How often do we allow others to define how we feel about ourselves?

I think this movie was a lesson in having confidence in who you are and in the person God made you to be.

We all need to stop allowing haters and our image obsessed culture and what’s socially acceptable to define who we are and how we feel about ourselves.

It’s time our measuring stick is God’s Word.

“Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes. Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight.”

-1 Peter 3:3-4

Be confident in who you are.

There is only one you.

Be confident in the wife you are.

You were chosen for being you.

Be confident in the mom you are.

God chose you to be your child’s mom.

Be confident in the woman of God you are.

God loves you just as you are.

Be confident in you and make all your dreams come true.

Fondly,

Lu
